Rising Prayers

---- Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer

With the deluges

in Texas and Louisiana

and India

and Nepal

and Bangladesh,

we are deluged by stories of

death and loss,

fear and trembling,

devastation and suffering

falling upon so many,

especially the most vulnerable.

In the name of all that is holy,

let us pray:

for the dead and the bereaved,

for the rescued and the rescuers,

for the people and the pets and the creatures

struggling to survive the troubled waters.

May aid and comfort be given and received

by those in desperate need.

In the name of all that is holy,

let us pray:

for the people

who witness

from all our places

in every land upon the earth.

Help us to understand that we are part of this story too.

In this moment,

our part is to enact love

in whatever way we can:

through prayer,

by sending money,

through volunteering to assist in recovery efforts,

by refusing to turn away.

With research and reports and teaching,

and art and song and poetry,

and childrearing and essays and sermons,

and in every other way we can imagine,

help us to tell the stories of our connections.

We are one people sharing one earth

with choices to make about the chapters still to come.

Help us to choose the way of love and justice.

Dear God of many names,

help us to choose the way of love and justice.

May it be so and Amen.
